Minor Ninth Intervals

A minor ninth interval is the distance from any note to a note thirteen half-steps away either ascending or descending. Another definition is an perfect octave plus a minor second. It is a dissonant interval.

Notice that a minor ninth interval contains the same amount of half-steps as an augmented octave.

Playing minor ninths on the guitar requires using the pick to strike the low note and the second finger to strike the high note. Strike the low note with a downward motion and strike the high note with an upward motion, as if you are trying to pinch the strings.

Be sure your guitar is in tune before playing the following examples.
