Diminished Fifth Intervals

A diminished fifth is the distance from any note to a note six half-steps away either ascending or descending. It is a dissonant interval.

Be sure your guitar is in tune before playing the following examples.

A Diminished Fifth Interval on the Guitar

A diminished fifth above A is Eb.

Bb (A#) Diminished Fifth Interval on the Guitar

A diminished fifth above Bb is Fb. Notice that Fb is actually an E note. However, an E above Bb is a augmented fourth. Also notice that a perfect fifth above Bb is F. A diminished fifth is one less half-step than a perfect fifth. Therefore, to indicate this is an augmented fifth an Fb is used.

A diminished fifth above B is F.

Note: Cb is a B. A diminished fifth above Cb is Gbb (G double flat).

Db (C#) Diminished Fifth Interval on the Guitar

A diminished fifth above Db is Abb (A double flat). Notice that Abb is actually a G note. However, a G above Db is an augmented fourth. Also notice that a perfect fifth above Db is Ab. A diminished fifth is one less half-step than a perfect fifth. Therefore, to indicate this is an augmented fifth an Abb is used.
