Diminished Fourth Intervals

A diminished fourth interval is the distance from any note to a note four half-steps away either ascending or descending. It is a dissonant interval.

Notice the distance between notes in a major third and a diminished fourth is four half-steps for both intervals.

Be sure your guitar is in tune before playing the following examples.

Bb (A#) Diminished Fourth Interval on the Guitar

A diminished fourth above Bb is Ebb (E double flat). Notice that Ebb is actually a D note. However, a D above Bb is a major third. Also notice that a perfect fourth above Bb is Eb. A diminished fourth is one less half-step than a perfect fourth. Therefore, to indicate this is a diminshed fourth a Ebb is used.

A diminished fourth above B is Eb.

Note: Cb is a B. A diminished fourth above Cb is F.

C Diminished Fourth Interval on the Guitar

A diminished fourth above C is Fb. Notice that Fb is actually an E note. However, an E above C is a major third. Also notice that a perfect fourth above C is F. A diminished fourth is one less half-step than a perfect fourth. Therefore, to indicate this is a diminshed fourth a Fb is used.

Note: B# is a C. A diminished fourth above B# is E.

A diminished fourth above Db is Gbb (G double flat). Notice that Gbb is actually an F note. However, an F above Db is a major third. Also notice that a perfect fourth above Db is Gb. A diminished fourth is one less half-step than a perfect fourth. Therefore, to indicate this is a diminshed fourth a Gbb is used.

A diminished fourth above F is Bbb. Notice that Bbb is actually an A note. However, an A above F is a major third. Also notice that a perfect fourth above F is Bb. A diminished fourth is one less half-step than a perfect fourth. Therefore, to indicate this is a diminshed fourth a Bbb is used.
