Minor Third Intervals

A minor third interval has one less half-step than a major third. That is, a minor third is the distance from any note to a note three half-steps away either ascending or descending. It is a consonant interval.

Be sure your guitar is in tune before playing the following examples.

A Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above Bb is Db.

A minor third above A# is C#.

B Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above B is D.

Note: Cb is a B. A minor third above Cb is Ebb (double flat).

C Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above C is Eb.

Note: B# is a C. A minor third above B# is F#.

Db (C#) Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above Db is Fb and a minor third above C# is E. Notice that Fb is actually an E note. However, an E above Db is a minor second. Also notice that a major third above Db is F. A minor third is one less half-step than a major third. Therefore, to indicate this is a minor third a Fb is used.

D Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above D is F.

Eb (D#) Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above Eb is Gb.

A minor third above D# is F#.

A minor third above E is G.

Note: Fb is an E. A minor third above Fb is Abb (double flat).

F Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above F is Ab.

Note: E# is an F. A minor third above E# is G#.

F# (Gb) Minor Third Interval on the Guitar

A minor third above F# is A and a minor third above Gb is Bbb. Notice that Bbb is actually an A note. However, an A above Gb is a minor second. Also notice that a major third above Gb is Bb. A minor third is one less half-step than a major third. Therefore, to indicate this is a minor second a Bbb is used.
