Major Seconds

A major second interval is the distance from any note to a note a whole-step (two consecutive half-steps) away either ascending or descending. It is a dissonant interval.

Playing a harmonic major second on the guitar is slightly challenging due to the distance between the notes on the fret board. It's not really a problem, however, since this interval is almost always played melodically (It sounds "out of tune" when played harmonically).

The notes of a melodic major second on the guitar are two frets apart on the same string. For example, a melodic C major second is the C note at the third fret fifth string and the D note at the fifth fret fifth string.

Be sure your guitar is in tune before playing the following examples.
